With Penn State's THON just around the corner, Penn State Crew Benefiting THON is ramping up its fundraising. For those that do not know, THON is a 46 hour dance marathon that is entirely student run which raises money for the Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. The Four Diamonds Fund's mission is to "conquer childhood cancer", and the money THON raises goes toward treatment, hospital visits, and family support. This is no small deal, THON usually rakes in upwards of $10,000,000 For The Kids, and the dance party itself is a sight to be seen (image below). Much of this fundraised money comes in through organizations, or "orgs". Many clubs, teams, and associations on campus have an affiliated org, which for my crew team comes in the form of Penn State Crew Benefiting THON. Our biggest event of the year is the ergaTHON, which is when, in shifts, we row continuously for 46 hours. People donate to support the team or individual rowers, and this year the event brought in almost $2,000 for our team's fundraising total. The event takes place in the basement of a house that has been in the crew team's possession for many years, it is not the prettiest of locations but it does the job. We start rowing Friday morning and continue until Sunday morning. 46 hours is a long time to be on the erg, but in 30min-1hr shifts and with friends hanging out with you its not that bad. We had many activities planned throughout the weekend to keep us occupied. Some of these activities included a cupcake decorating party, a potluck dinner, and a water social (water-pong and flip cup). In addition, whoever was on the erg had the choice of either plugging in their music or choosing what to watch via projection on the wall. Popular choices were The Office, Jersey Shore, and NBA basketball. It was fun to hang out with the team, eat junk food, and row FTK. Below are some photos documenting this event! Comments are closed.
