It has been a packed month working in the field. Since my last post, I have worked a 9 day course, a 4 day transition weekend for an at-risk course, and a 6 day course for a huge group from a private school. I will explain all of these further, and dare I say that I have a few photos this time, but for now the point is that it has been a varied and busy heat of the summer. 9 day open enrollment course

Other stuff Climbing The Nose of Looking Glass - On a day off after my 9 day course I did a multi pitch with two friends up Looking Glass Rock, a super cool slab climbing area near Cedar Rock. Here are some photos. Staff Appreciation -With the end of the Episcopal course and another group program at Cedar Rock, all staff were off at the same time, so there was a staff appreciation gathering at Table Rock. At this gathering there were awards for 3, 5 and 10 year achievements as well as base camp awards, raffles, a huge catered dinner, and a dance party afterwards. The two days/ nights following the end of Episcopal was packed with lots of people and fun. The only photo I have from all of these festivities is the following: July and August have been action packed and a ton of fun. I'm really in the swing of things and feeling much more competent in most aspects of my job. Each course is very different, so I am constantly learning, and never bored. Coming up, this fall is going to be busy and active as well. Here's the plan right now:
Through Oct 5: Instructing with NCOBS, 4 group enrollment programs. Additionally doing a 5 day women's climbing camp and 6 day whitewater paddling camp for professional development. Oct 8-24ish (dates tentative): Solo thru hiking a section of the Mountains-To-Sea Trail, from it's start at Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains back to Table Rock. It will be a 220 mile hike through the mountains of North Carolina. Oct 27-Nov 23: Service bus with NCOBS. A small crew of all ladies is taking a 4 week road trip around the southeast to all of NCOBS base camps. We are starting in the mountains, going down to the Florida Keys, and back. We will be doing service projects at the base camps, service projects for the local communities, as well as climbing and paddling professional development. It's going to be a ton of fun and a wild life experience, I can't wait. So there's my summer update. It's a wild ride and I'm loving it. As a final note, here is a photo of my dad, at our Alma Mater Penn State's Nittany Lion Shrine. He is currently biking across the country. He started in California and is finishing at the Atlantic Ocean north of Boston TOMORROW. Way to go dad! You know this is radical because when I tell everyone at NCOBS about it they are blown away, and those are some pretty intense people. Congrats to my dad on this huge life achievement and on raising around $18,000 for the Jimmy Fund. To see his daily blog, visit this link, and to donate, click here. |
