Since my last post I've worked one 6 day course and otherwise been enjoying some "time off". That's in quotes because it was higher impact than course. Blue Ridge Relay On the weekend of September 10-11 I participated in a 208 mile running relay from Grayson Highlands in VA to Highland Brewery in Asheville, NC. I was on a team of current and former NCOBS folks. Crushers! Each runner ran 3 legs of this relay, my legs totaled 16 miles. We also borrowed 2 15-passenger vans from the school and had 2 logistics captains/ drivers. The event went through the night, and was not just a test in running but also managing low sleep, running after you're already killer sore, and fueling properly. I'm happy to report that my legs went very well, no injuries, and my pace was faster than I had expected. Check my strava if you'd like to see the maps/ splits. Here are some photos to sum up the rest of this event: River time You'll always hear from my mouth "I'm not much of a boater" (with a Minnesota accent). But the truth is, this month, I've spent a lot of time on the river. This blasphemy started at the beginning of the month when I paddled the French Broad River with a big group from base camp. I took a solo canoe, my main and most common form of whitewater transportation. After the Blue Ridge Relay, I spent a fun day on the same section with another huge group from base camp, this time, I rafted though. Main reason being, my body was kind of dead from the relay and if I had found myself in an out-of-boat experience, I wasn't sure I had a life saving swim in me. I have no photos from this day, as is usually the case when I go paddling. Two days later, I went on the New Staff Training's river block. They were tandem canoeing and learning to solo boat, and I went in a solo boat in order to brush up before my long course that is about to start. I got lots of great coaching and practice with boat rescue, rope throws, and coaching. No photos from this block either, except for the one, the classic, the crew walking through a drive through. From left to right, Erin, me, Daniel. That's me in the solo canoe... it's been a big learning process for me this summer, and I'm finally feeling pretty comfortable in it and starting to like whitewater more. Worth noting though that on this day I took the most massive swim of my paddling career... so it's important to remember to stay humble out there! what's next? Time off has been awesome! Starting in just a few days I clock in for the next month and a half... as I will be instructing the mountains phase of the semester course. That's 45 days in the field with adults... my dream!! So there will not be a blog post in October and odds are pretty good you won't hear from me at all. Rest assured that I'm just out there doing the thing!
