Current Status: Less than two weeks away from graduating from Penn State and moving to North Carolina. The biggest transition of my life. The High school to college transition was school to school & home to independent. College to Outward Bound transition is school to real life & indoor bed to tent. Did that make sense? The point is, college is coming to an end and I'm just tying up some loose ends and preparing to leave for my new job. Right now, the best preparation for this summer is working programs with Campus Recreation's Outdoor Adventures. For OA, I lead trips as well as facilitate groups on the high ropes course. With the warmer weather recently, I have had a fun month of work programs. I worked 3 high ropes programs this month. The season opening program was for 200 Army ROTC students, all freshmen and sophomores. They were a fun group to facilitate because the kids were very gung ho for the ropes course. I'd say their capabilities and willingness to challenge themselves was above the average of college kids that I've led.
The third program I worked was an Outdoor Adventures high ropes night. Unlike the first two, this was not a custom booked program by one group, but an open enrollment night program through the trips side of the organization. As a trip leader, I facilitate this kind of group from time to time. Only 4 showed up, which was the minimum we can run with, but we were so glad to be able to go. It was 70 degrees and light until almost 8:30pm. The group was super competent and they flew through the course. A perfect last high ropes program for me! Lastly, on Saturday of Easter weekend I led a caving trip. This trip was to Hennigh Cave, which is located on a Mennonite family's farm 30 minutes from campus. Hennigh is a dry cave, and we spent about 2hrs in it. I led this trip with a friend of mine who I actually used to row with, and is the one that told me I should apply to this job. We had an awesome time with a great group. This caving trip was a great way to close out my time working for Outdoor Adventures. So I'm wrapping up classes tomorrow and with only two finals on Monday of next week I have a pretty chill end to college. I graduate on May 4th and leave for North Carolina on May 6th. I will write again before I head out, detailing plans and parting thoughts. (s)He will settle in one place only to go off elsewhere shortly afterwards with a new set of desires. -Alexis de Tocqueville
